BYOT: Building Your Own Theology

We invite you (and those you know) to join us this Sunday for another discussion.

Our question to consider and respond to this week is two-fold: How you define your spirituality? What, if anything, do you gain from defining your spirituality? Many of us expressed a sense of liberation when we no longer clung to a religious affliation or moniker. Do we limit or burden ourselves when we define our spirituality, or is our spirituality strengthened by definition?

We'll dig into those questions, and figure out what our next topic will be after this.

Guest Speaker: Doug Miller from Consumer Advocates in American Real Estate

Doug Miller joins us today to speak on behalf of Consumer Advocates in American Real Estate (CAARE). CAARE is the only non-profit charity dedicated to consumerism with real estate brokers. The real estate industry may be the most corrupt in the U.S.. There is so much miss-information about house buying and selling that is proliferated through main stream sources that consumers don't stand a chance. Real estate licensees are also recipients of this miss-information and often unknowing victims.

Musical Performance: Susan Reitzel & Cindy Schelske

Join us for a musical performance by friend of the fellowship, Susan Reitzel and Cindy Schelske. Susan Reitzel (vocals/guitar) and Cindy Schelske (violin/fiddle), both having gotten back into playing music just in the last few years, began playing together locally at open mics, Susan's shows at Blackwater Coffee House, and since April 2013, at a variety of local venues as two of the members of the Three Muscatelles. They are happy for the opportunity to come to Lake Fellowship to perform a selection of covers; contemporary, folk, & ballads, along with some originals.

Guest Speaker: Sarah Walker

Sarah Walker is an activist and reformer on the rights of women and girls within the criminal justice system. The increase in females in prison, and the fact that the prison services cannot keep up with the demand, females face unique challenges and experiences that go largely unrecognized in the male dominated criminal justice system.  Walker created a list of recommendations on the treatment of women when incarcerated and has connected women with employment opportunities.

Lake Fellowship UUs: Who Are We? Who Cares?

Earlier this year, UU Minister Leslie Mills lead a discussion with us to look into who we, as Unitarian Universalists, are. She concluded her program by leaving us with two questions to answer and a challenge to consider. The two questions were, 1.) What is your religion? and 2.) What do you believe? The challenge was to embrace the act of Worship, even if it meant redefining it from notions we previously held about it.

Today, in a loosely moderated discussion, we'll revisit Leslie's questions and her challenge, and begin to share our responses and thoughts about each.
