All About the BYOT Group

By now many of you have heard about and have maybe even attended a gathering of the BYOT group. BYOT stands for Building Your Own Theology, and it's the title the group has used to represent one of the core goals of the group. The group started meeting early this past summer, has been meeting weekly ever since, and plans to continue weekly meetings for the foreseeable future.

For our program today, BYOT group creators Marnie Karger and Dave Wahlstedt will share more about the group's origin, what meetings are like, and what we hope attendees will acquire from them.

BYOT: Building Your Own Theology

We invite you (and those you know) to join us this Sunday for another discussion.

Our question to consider and discuss this week will be: How do we explain the "unexplainable" aspects in our lives? Do you believe that "God is in the Gaps"? How do you make sense of what you don't (or can't) know?

We'll share our thoughts, and figure out what our next topic will be after this. As always, come with an open mind, and an open heart.

Water Ceremony

Welcome back! This is our traditional, first program of the new season. Each Fellowship member and friend is invited to bring a small amount of water from a place that is special to him/her. Each of us will, one by one, pour our water into a larger vessel while we explain the significance of the water (where did the water come from, why does it have special meaning for us?). The Water Ceremony, also sometimes called “Water Communion,” was first used in Unitarian Universalist worship in the 1980’s.

We invite you (and those you know) to join us this Sunday for another discussion.

Our questions to consider and discuss this week is: How would you like to be remembered? What are doing in your life now that you hope will leave some lasting impression or legacy on those who live with and after you?

We'll share our memories, and figure out what our next topic will be after this. As always, come with an open mind, and an open heart.

We invite you (and those you know) to join us this Sunday for another discussion.

Our topic to consider and discuss this week is: Recall a time (or a few moments) when you truly felt like you were alive -- a time when you felt like you were living your best life, soaking in every thing good, and being the best person you could be -- a time when you felt most connected to the world around you and/or most connected to your inner self.

We'll share our memories, and figure out what our next topic will be after this. As always, come with an open mind, and an open heart.

Our question to consider and discuss this week is: What is the goal of Spiritual Practice? We'll come at this question from many angles: What do we as individuals hope to achieve through awakening our spirituality? What do we as a small group hope to accomplish from our gatherings and discussions? What does anyone who practices their spirituality (however you define that act) hope to "get" from it?

Our topic to consider and discuss this week is: Prayer & Meditation. Do you pray regularly or only in times of crisis? What do you get out of meditating? Have you reaped rewards from prayer or meditation? How do you respond when others tell you that they pray for you?

We'll dig into those questions, and figure out what our next topic will be after this. As always, come with an open mind, and an open heart.

Our questions to consider and respond to this week is: Why are we here? Besides our biological impetus to procreate, what are we "supposed" to do with our lives? How do we make meaning from our lives, and what do we hope to accomplish before we die?

We'll dig into those questions, and figure out what our next topic will be after this. As always, come with an open mind, and an open heart.

Our question to consider and respond to this week is: What happens when we die? For many, a belief in some sort of afterlife or rebirth is not only comforting, but also a motivation to live well in this life. For others, not having a belief in any sort of life after death makes living each day all the more precious.

We'll dig into that question, and figure out what our next topic will be after this. As always, come with an open mind, and an open heart.
