Well, Lake Fellowship members and friends, you’ve outdone yourselves in providing much needed food and financial support to our neighbors who are feeling unsafe. Here's an update of what's happened and what's coming up.
WeCAN Food Collection
The beginning of Feb., Lake Fellowship was the first church to donate non perishable food to WeCAN for their home delivery to immigrant families afraid to leave their home. WeCAN next received over 25,000 lbs of food from other churches in the community! WeCAN has delivered some of that food and do not need further donations to this cause. They are currently delivering to 13 families still shut in their homes.
WeCAN will contact us when more food is needed.
WeCAN shared that they also have a group of honor students from a local high school that have put together numerous bags of food that were delivered to schools in the area for kids attending school to bring home.
The city of Mound has an organization that is very active in setting up demonstrations, providing drivers to deliver food and have collected food for WeCAN too.
Lake Fellowship, you are part of this active community that continues to help members in our community that are in need. Thank you for your advocacy.
WeCAN Speaker/Program
WeCAN’s volunteer coordinator, Kari Raaen, will be giving a program at Lake Fellowship this spring. She'll give us an update about WeCAN's efforts and share how we can continue to stay involved in their work. Stay tuned for more information to come.
Soup Sunday
This Sunday, March 1st, is Soup Sunday!

What it is
You remember how this works: you get something tasty (soup or yummy snacks) to eat and you donate cash to the charity chosen by your soup makers. Soup Sunday feeds us and many others in our community along with giving us time to share in fellowship with each other.

Who it benefits
There is a list of vetted charities on the bulletin board at the A-frame for each month's soup makers to choose from. Most of them are local non-profits, or local chapters of larger charity groups. We've collected more than $1,000 over the last 6 Months (Sep-Feb.) through these Soup Sundays — nice job UUs! Thank you all for your donations and to the soup makers for cooking and serving the yummy food!

How to help
Please sign up to provide soup for a future date. You’ll find a signup sheet on the bulletin board (thanks for putting that up, Terry). Remember, several people can band together to make the soup and defray the cost.

Neighborhood Food Project
This Sunday is also our monthly collection day for the Neighborhood Food Project (NFP).
Please bring groceries/items to Lake Fellowship. We have a few “Green/orange Bags” at the A-frame, so feel free to bring your donations in your own bag(s) from home and fill up a bag at Lake Fellowship. WeCAN also takes checks if you want to make a cash donation, which they use to buy perishables.
See the list below for the most recent wish list of most-needed items:
- Dry goods: rice, beans, corn/flour tortillas, flour, bread
- Spices & seasonings: cumin, chili powder, oregano, paprika, black pepper, salt
- Canned items: dices tomatoes, green chilies, refried beans, corn, garbanzo beans, tuna, chicken, soups, fruit
- Snack items: cookies, potato chips, corn chips
- Pantry items: cereal, pancake mix, maple syrup, peanut butter, pasta & pasta sauce, coffee, hot cocoa, salsa & guacamole, hot sauce & taco sauce.
We also need a volunteer to deliver the food we collect on March 1st and April 5th to deliver the food to WeCAN as the McGlynn’s aren’t available those dates. We usually make the delivery on Monday morning and WeCAN staff will gladly carry the food into their place if you want them to.
I will update you next month on the progress towards our goal to donate 1,000 pounds of non perishables this year (Sept. - May) to WeCAN. Thanks for continuing to make a difference in our community.
