We kick off April with our new theme of Stewardship. In the past, we've had discussions about how we've been good stewards across a wide spectrum of services and good deeds. Today, we'll look into our pasts to share what and who shaped us to become good stewards. We'll also talk about what we can do to help foster and nurture good stewards around us.
In anticipation of this discussion, please consider the following questions:
1. What thoughts, ideas, images come to mind when you think of the word "steward"?
"American Politics in the Age of Polarization: 1976-2016" - How and why has the US become polarized? What are the implications of that and what might be done to address it? As part of this month's theme of Wonder (grace, being present, etc.) it is important as UU's to understand what we can do to cross the divide and keep open minds when discussing political topics.
Unitarians and Universalists have a long colorful history. Today, Lake Fellowship member Tim McGlynn will share his unique view of the UU saga. (Remember, today is the start of Daylight Savings Time, so spring forward to look back with us!)
Please join us as we welcome guest speaker, Anne Supplee. The title of her program is "Faith and Trust and Doubt -What I've learned from those who are dying."
Anne Supplee will weave stories -those from scripture and those from her own experience as a chaplain and a Quaker- as we explore individually and as a community what “faith” means.
Faith is the new theme for March, and is a word some UUs don't like to use. Then again, many of us are equally uncomfortable admitting we have doubt. Are we just hung up on syntax, or are there some deeper reasons we don't like to use terms like "worship" and "sacred" in our fellowship? Today, lead by Marnie Karger, we'll dig into these questions as well as reflect on a brilliant TED Talk from Rev. Tom Honey.
"Before he was even born, Sarah and Ross knew that their son Thomas wouldn’t live long. But as they let go of him, they made a decision that reverberated through a world that they never bothered to think about. Years later, after a couple awkward phone calls and an unexpected family road trip, they managed to meet the people and places for whom Thomas’ short life was an altogether different kind of gift."
Join us today as we listen to and reflect on a special Radiolab Podcast about a purpose that took equal parts loss and curiosity to exist.
Matthew Tift, a Minnetonka native, is an Eagle Scout, accomplished choral and violin performer, has a PhD in Music and an awesome job as a Web Developer. So why is he obsessed with his heart rate monitor? From long shots to side tracks, Matthew's life hasn't seemed simple, and yet he can attribute nearly everything he's done to one, clear purpose. He will share his story and his mission with us in his humble and thought-provoking presentation.
February is the month of Valentine's Day, Cupid, and all things schmaltzy. But what purpose does love serve in our lives? In addition to a brief history of the life of St. Valentine, we'll host a lively group discussion about the merits, shortcomings, and mysteries of love.
